Gentle Soul
An intimate portrait of Hue & Cry with Dino Cavallone

Hair & Make by Janelle Peters for Studio Celes

At first, Dino Cavallone doesn't cut an imposing figure. His unassuming way, his winning smile, all too gentle to put anyone off. But we here at People's Weekly know the truth. Behind soft brown eyes, Dino hides a wealth of experience and knowledge for someone of his years.

We sat down with him on his birthday, something that surprised even us. We didn't know, in fact, until he mentioned it offhandedly during our shoot, and one of his small entourage insisted he communicate it to everyone. But such is the humility of the young Mr. Cavallone, putting others first, even on his special day.

"It's just not about me, not really," he informed us. "It's about the music, right? Making sure it's great, and everyone's happy with us."

His tone takes a softer note, reminiscent in our opinion of the gentle line he plays in the recently released secret video of his audition for the band. "Hue & Cry is my family." He shifts in the chair, fussing with his sleeves (shown below, wearing Esprit de Paris, $200) as he speaks. "I don't think I've ever felt more comfortable with anyone in my life. If you want me to talk about them, I can?" So we ask: What are they like behind the scenes? And his reply doesn't shock us at all.

"Great guys. The best, honestly. Keith has the biggest, most genuine smile you could ask for. If I had a brother, I'd want them to be like him. And Finnick, he was the one who really supported me at first. He's given me a lot of good advice. August makes sure stuff doesn't go to my head." He chuckles, here. "Drummer, right, so watch him throw a stick at me or something. And Kaoru." Dino pauses, looking thoughtful. "He rounds it all out. Like the cherry on top. I don't know how to explain it, sorry. These guys take care of me, and I do my best to keep up."

It's our experience now that our featured guest thinks far more about his band "family" than himself, or at least talks about them more. The editors would like to add a personal note that they were moved by his earnestness. We would be remiss if we didn't inform readers that he looked a touch misty at the mention of their meteoric rise, and of the way their beloved fans—his words—show all the support he could ever ask for.

Life as a star isn't easy, but when pushed, Dino admits that he's grateful for it, and appreciative of the work they put in. "Sure, if you mean long hours... learning how to write songs and not just play them... I think someone's going to rope me into singing, eventually." He smiles that winning smile, again, and our intern swoons. "Maybe."

His background, as it turns out, isn't so colorful. He quiets, mentioning only that he misses it a little bit, simpler times, but he doesn't elaborate. In lieu of depressing our readers, or trying to get him to talk about anything but Hue & Cry, we've chosen to give you a look at the enigmatic, wilder side of Dino Cavallone—tattoos we didn't know he had until the dressing team fainted.
