EP Review: DEFYING ATMOSPHERE - Quatrine

posted by Mel O'Day - Nov. 15

Quatrine took the charts by surprise this week, in more ways than one. Newcomers Defying Atmosphere released their new EP with no warning, no fanfare, and no cost. According to the band's lead, Mr. Universe, it's meant as apology for their unexpected cancellation of several appearances earlier this month. Personally, I'd say this release makes up for the faux pas in spades.

With this set, the band takes their already established fantastical themeing and cranks the dial as far as it will go, using its four songs to tell of an epic battle for Earth, with humanity led by the EP's titular Quatrine, the ancient "Heroine of Lights". Universe and lead singer Lora Estillo put their all into the lyrics, instilling a true passion and desire to rise as part of their rebellion for freedom.

There's a heavy presence of melodic doom conveyed throughout. "Under Siege of Light" combines strong, harsh vocals with melodic deep singing, breaking the song up while fusing it as a cohesive melodic body. "Imperfect Sacrifice" is a strong emotional ballad with catchy lead guitar riffs and repetitive beauty that is clean enough to became a favorite track even after the first listen.

If Defying Atmosphere keeps on this trend, they're set to become a real force in the metal charts, and beyond. These aren't songs to pop on and rock out to, but an experience to be absorbed and lived.

Quatrine is currently available for free as a digital download on Bandretreat and LoudCloud.
