We’ve all heard music by Flowers Over Bones and we’ve all heard about how their close family-like dynamic is a big part of their success as a group and appeal. But what if the family connection is more than just a publicity stunt? That’s right; the members of Flowers Over Bones are actually blood relatives who have taken advantage of their familial ties to get ahead and they’re not from just any family. They’re from the mob and incredibly high ranking members too. They just happened to enjoy making music together.

The connection becomes clear once one looks at their origins in Britannia, Europa, and Nippon America. As previously reported the shamisen player, Ivan Karelin’s ancestry has been traced back to roots in a violent Japanese clan, the Okamoto family. With further digging through the Okamoto’s clan family tree, Ivan can be connected to his cousins, Rei and Pao-Lin. But here’s the big twist: about two hundred years ago the Okamoto clan was struggling to stay in power so the leader married his daughter off to the wealthy head of a famous Europa mob family, the Smiths. Does that name sound familiar? He doesn’t go by it, preferring to be called Doctor for the stage, but Ruairidh Smith is the direct descendant and heir of the Smith family leader and his Japanese wife. That’s right, you heard it here first: Doctor is the Smith family boss and the others in his band are his most trusted cousins.

Where is Luce’s connection to the Smiths? Her background has been shrouded in mystery for quite some time, and it’s questionable if she is a true blood relative to the Smiths or Okamotos. Nevertheless we can confirm her strong tie through the tattoo on her cheek. This very flower design is a symbol the Smith family and Okamoto clan adopted shortly after their merge. If she isn’t in the family by blood then it’s very likely she is indeed Doctor’s wife in secret as long suspected by fans.

So how does being in the mafia help one get ahead in the music business? Flowers Over Bones clearly climbed the charts and Virgo ranks unnaturally fast even if there were threats and power struggles behind the scenes. The answer is simple: Edward Blanche. For years there have been rumors of a tie between Blanche and the mob. Well it just so happens the Smith family took one Blanche family under its wing about twenty years ago. In other words, Blanche is simply giving his superiors what they want, a career in music and a place among his company’s best in return for what the Smiths have done for his own family for years. It might be sweet if there wasn’t so much crime involved.
