Article: Know Your Notes: Ivan Karelin

Today's Know Your Notes, the site where we introduce up and coming musicians, we're focusing on Flowers Over Bones' shamisen player by popular request. Fans call him Saku or Sakura (translations: to bloom; cherry blossom) after his iconic flower, but he actually goes by his real name, Ivan Karelin. Not much is known about this musician, but that's what fans love about him. His shamisen is a traditional Japanese instrument. But don't think he belongs solely in the classical section. Karelin does anything but play it that way. In fact, Flowers Over Bones recently returned from a successful tour, taking the music scene by surprise with their progressive pop with classical instrument style. They're one to keep an ear on. And Karelin too. Just don't expect him to do a lot of talking. Listen for his shamisen instead.

Ivan Karelin can be follwed on Twitter (@ikarelin_hana), tumblr (sakura_jamisen), and Facebook (Sakura Over Bones (Ivan Karelin)).

Keep following Know Your Notes for more on the new musicians you should know about.
