No Messenger From On High:
Angels, Music and Kiernan "Sariel" Macleon

by Patrick Fahey

Angels are in the secular media today, however, they are not the kind to be found amid any of the nine choirs of the heavenly host singing the praises of the All Mighty. Rather, one in particular, Kiernan MacLeon, a self-styled "Gothic" musician (a blasphemous label if there ever was one, since nothing about it resembles High Medieval church architecture) has taken upon himself the name and the persona of "Sariel", one of the Grigori or Watcher Angels, in a bid to allure and seduce an unsuspecting public, who know nothing of the great danger that such a being presents.

MacLeon's origins are quite earthly, since he was known in the north east as a sometime musician in a number of so-called "Gothic" bands, these morbid coteries of disaffected youths clad in black, both males and females wearing disgusting amounts of pore-clogging cosmetics in gloomy shades. At some point, he assumed his stage name "Sariel", a seemingly angelic moniker, but not one to whom a wise Christian should call upon for assistance: Sariel belongs to one of the Grigori or so-called "Watcher" Angels. These figures appear only in the extra-canonic book of Scripture known as the Book of Enoch, removed from Scripture due to its questionable authorship, a group of angels who supposedly departed from heaven, either after a 'disagreement' with their Lord and Creator, or after being tempted by the sons and daughters of man, whom they instructed in a number of questionable skills, including astrology, ceremonial magick, warfare, and cosmetics. Sariel in particular was the angel to instruct the sons and daughters of men in magick and in "the courses of the moon", namely the lunar calender, which ties into astrology. As well as teaching these dangerous skills, Sariel also consorted among the children of man, concieving the illegitimate offspring that would come to be known as the Nephillim, the half-breed creatures whose very existence, among other things, enraged the All Mighty and caused Him to cleanse the earth through the waters of the Flood. Even the lyrics to some of his songs reference these fallen angels, particularly "Children of Heaven", which describes the fall of one angel, "Angels of Weeping", which describes a sensuous and sinful encounter between a Watcher Angel and a human (man or woman is not specified) and "Blood of Angels", which lists the names of several Watcher Angels and would, in the wrong hands, easily double as an invocation to these beings which no man who values his soul would dare call into this world.

It comes as no surprise, then, that this Sariel is no less of a seducer than his namesake. With his androgynous appearance and pale appearance, he holds his unsuspecting audience in thrall - one wonders if he might not have some magickal spells at his disposal. And he seems utterly shameless and far from fastidious in the kind of persons he attracts, as he has been seen kissing the hands and cheeks of fans of either gender and some of sadly indeterminate gender. Most recently, with some fanfare from the secular media, he formed the band known as Crown of Thorns (another blasphemous moniker, usurping and twisting the name of one of the relics associated with the Redeemer's Passion and Death). One wonders if there might not be more to his stage persona, if he might not be possessed by the essence of this fallen angel, and if that is the case, he is one man who needs the prayers of the faithful, to deliver him from this diabolical spirit's grip, that he might no longer use his talents to seduce the unsuspecting and rather, to use them to glorify the All Mighty.
