Perhaps the flaw is with the reporting model itself. We are ordinary humans with ordinary problems, and yet our positions are somewhat larger-than-life, so our ordinary problems are boring to read about. This encourages the all-or-nothing attitude you mention. The flaws ascribed to us are so unbelievable that we seem to have none in comparison.
